Derived Houses
“In my father’s house are many mansions,” Jesus is said to have said. And in each house in a chart are associations related to all the other houses - wheels within wheels – somewhat similar to the “duad” idea with signs, where each sign contains a sub-vibration of all other signs. (With duads, each 2-1/2° increment takes on the flavor of each successive sign. For example: 0° - 2-1/2° of Aries is the Aries duad, 2-1/2° - 5° of Aries is the Taurus duad, 5° - 7-1/2° of Aries is the Gemini duad, and so on.) Thus, we have a rich fabric of interactive possibilities to help describe every situation under the sun.
The word “derived” connotes origins (like the derivation of words), where something comes from. The American Heritage Dictionary defines it as “obtained or received from a source, arrived at by reasoning, deduced,” with roots “spring from” or “draw off,” literally from (de) the river (rive).
A “derived house” is the one where you land when you count around the chart from another house, not the house where you begin. Derived houses incorporate the associations of traditional house meanings but from the perspective of other houses. For example, your marital partner’s boss would be signified by the house of the boss (10th) as counted from (derived from) the house of the partner (7th). You treat the 7th House “as if” it is a 1st House (it’s the house of origin) and count it as 1, then count the 8th House as 2, the 9th as 3, and so on around the chart, arriving at the 4th House as the 10th from the 7th. Thus the 4th House signifies the partner’s boss. Derived houses are used extensively in horary astrology to find the appropriate chart location for a given person or situation. Derived houses are as follows:
It's easier to look at the information this way: 1st House perspective

Houses can be associated with elements, and that might add a nuance to interpretation: Fire houses: 1, 5, 9 Earth houses: 2, 6, 10 Air houses: 3, 7, 11 Water houses: 4, 8, 12 This is a technique employed in horary astrology. Also, give extra credence to the angular houses as places of stronger power: 1, 4, 7 and 10. From horary astrology we also pick up the idea of treating like situations in a sibling kind of way. For instance, early education is located in the 3rd house and some astrologers consider this grade school, with junior high in the 5th (3rd from the 3rd), high school in the 7th (3rd from the 5th), college in the 9th (3rd from the 7th) and if you go on to graduate school, that’s the 11th (3rd from the 9th), etc. Or, if you own several pieces of property, the 1st piece is located in the 4th house, the 2nd would be like the sibling property to the first piece and would be located in the 3rd from the 4th, namely the 6th. The next piece of property would be the 3rd from the 6th, namely the 9th, and so on. In his book on horary, Horary Astrology Plain and Simple, Tony Louis points to this as a rather rare, exception-to-the-rule employed by some modern horary astrologers. But he warns that if you did not own the second piece of property but rather you were considering buying it, it would not be considered as a sibling to the first piece. Ancients would usually use the 4th house again to consider that second piece of property, although you could stand at the 4th and count to the natural house of the matter (4th), and arrive at the 7th (4th from the 4th). For another example from Tony, if you were asking about moving from one career position to another, go to the 10th and count 10 from there, coming to the 7th. Consider the significators of both the 10th and the 7th houses in relation to the significators of the 1st house to see which position is better for the querent (the person in question). (Significators are the planets ruling the cusp signs and any planets in the houses in question.) There is a modern twist on ancient houses. The ancients always located the father in the 4th house of family roots. (After all, we take our names from our fathers in our patriotic culture.) The mother is located in the 10th as the spouse of the father (7th from the 4th). Modern astrologers often locate the mother in the 4th as the home-related parent and the 10th as the father because he represents the family to the outer world. You can go either way, but pick a method and stick to it. EXAMPLES In my chart, we can look for the birth of my great niece, the daughter of my sister’s son: sister = 3, child = 5, 5th from the 3rd (sister’s child) = 7th, 5th from the 7th (sister’s child’s child) = 11th. The birth was Nov. 10, 2002, with transiting Sun, Mars, Jupiter and Pluto all aspecting my South Node in my 11th. The next day was a 1st Quarter Moon right on my North Node in my 5th with the Sun T-squaring to my Nodes. Maybe this little girl is someone I knew in a past life or with whom I’ll have a special relationship in this life. 11th is an “air’ house, so perhaps communication with her will be important in some way.
In the case of the horary for the woman about getting a new career position, it’s the situation like Tony discussed: look at the 10th from the 10th, which is the 7th. In the horary, we find Gemini at the Desc and Saturn in Gemini in the 7th. In Solar Fire’s horary ratings for essential dignities, Mercury is a +5 and Saturn is a +1, both of which bode well. Saturn is a natural indicator for career, as well, and we find the benefic Venus is applying to a sextile to Saturn. Mercury is about to receive a quincunx from the Moon at the MC, so it does sound like there would at least be some kind of adjustment or compromise in the situation (and indeed, if she does get the job, it’s not her first choice of where she wanted to work but it’s an acceptable second).
Try playing with derived houses – you just might find that they add a layer to your interpretations that you had not considered before!
