2006 OverviewIntroductionNothing stays the same forever, especially not in 2006! Several major factors make this year one of difficult transition. Nothing will occur on a small scale, either, since the biggest planet, Jupiter (whose job it is to magnify and exaggerate), is often in the middle of the action. Ancient astrologers considered Jupiter beneficial. If we’re lucky, we’ll find silver linings in the many threatening clouds that are gathering. We’re already in the midst of a condition that demands we get to the bottom of matters and exposes what has been hidden or repressed. But like opening Pandora’s Box, we don’t know just what will come out, and the result might only be appreciated later in retrospect. This began late last October and continues until late this November.1 Associated with this condition is a dangerously explosive formation that forces us to abandon old patterns, occurring three times, beginning in late January.2 This goes beyond merely clearing out the deadwood before a new planting; it’s more on the order of removing a gangrene limb so the rest of the body can survive. Launching new ventures (including marrying) around these times is not recommended. Instead, be innovative in making adjustments to ongoing projects. Divinity (however you like to label it) does seem to work in mysterious ways; we’ll be in no shortage of those in 2006. The new year is barely underway when two planetary forces begin to clash in a battle that lasts into the fall.3 We’re torn between a harsh look at reality or a hard look the other way. We’re more susceptible to fears and our faith is tested. We may be more easily deluded or bamboozled; try extra hard to keep your wits about you. That’s quite challenging some months (see discussion of the Earth element, below). A time to round a bend and head in a different direction began at the end of 2005 and stretches into late October. 4 Trends that began in the spring of 2000 go through an adjustment period now, requiring us to loosen reigns we’ve held too tightly and get a firmer grip on other matters with which we’ve been too lax. Situations come to a head this summer 5, particularly regarding the imbalances in how we share (or don’t share) our resources. On an individual level, this may bring competition between children for parent’s discretionary spending or fights over inheritance. On the collective level, it’s more like class warfare between lords and serfs or the Haves and Have-nots. Tensions may be particularly strained in January and again in September-October, when we’re pushed to make difficult decisions. As this summer wanes, we come under an influence lasting into next summer where we’re torn between ideals and practicalities, or between trying to evade issues versus taking responsibility.6 All the while, we’re in the midst of a religious revolution. Our notions of what constitute worship and devotion are changing. Fundamentalism is growing alongside a very different spiritual (“New Age”) movement. We see this signaled astrologically by a blending of the influences of the planet of religion (Neptune) and the planet of revolution (Uranus). For a period of eight years (2003-2011), they are each traveling through the sign that the other governs (see the Star Pages for “As We Begin 2006”). In 2006, the Earth element is often sorely missing. None of the planets from Jupiter out to Pluto spend any part of this year in an Earth sign. That leaves it to the quick-moving planets to fill in the blank but they only do so briefly, in spurts. Consequently, at five New Moons (moments that strike the chord for the following four weeks), there are no planets in this element (3/29, 5/26-27, 6/25, 10/21-22, 11/20), and only one planet is in Earth at four other New Moons (1/29, 2/27, 7/24-25, 12/20). It will be tough during these lunar cycles to be strongly grounded. We’ll need to strive harder to be practical and realistic, and to base plans on facts rather than thoughts or impressions. We also have New Moons this year when we’re low on planets in the Cardinal mode (see Keywords on the inside back cover). This category of signs prods us toward action and meeting situations head on. These New Moons start four-week periods when it’s more difficult to get things going: 1/29, 8/23, 11/2 and 12/20 (no Cardinal planets) and 4/27 (only one Cardinal planet). This is the final year of a struggle we’ve been grappling with for three years now.7 It forces us to come to terms with how the established way of doing things just isn’t working any longer. This influence is strong the second half of February and the last week of April. It’s also highlighted at the March 29 Solar Eclipse New Moon,8 kicking off a 4-week period when it’s our best chance to come up with solutions. 1The condition is called a “mutual reception.” This is when two planets are each in the sign ruled by the other. In this case, Jupiter entered Scorpio (ruled by Pluto) on 10/25/05, remaining there until 11/23/06, while Pluto is in Sagittarius (ruled by Jupiter) since 1995, remaining there until 2008. The combination exaggerates extremes. 2 Pluto at the midpoint of Jupiter and Chiron, exact Jan. 31, May 14-15 and Aug. 25. 3Jupiter square Neptune, exact 1/27, 5/15-16 and 9/24. 4Jupiter last passed Saturn in May 2000. They meet up every 20 years. Now a quarter of that cycle is elapsed, and Jupiter is 90° from (square) Saturn a good deal of 2006 (see Star Pages for June 22). From late November 2005 through January 2006, Mars make a troublesome T-square with them. In May, Jupiter and Saturn become square again until late November. In September and October, they make a T-square with Neptune. 5Jupiter makes a T-square with the long-term opposition between Saturn and Chiron. It begins around the May 27 New Moon, is very strong at June 25 New Moon, and is still in effect, though weaker, at the July 25 New Moon. 6Saturn opposes Neptune (again 2/28/07 and 6/25/07): We’re caught in a battle between order and chaos, and chaos seems stronger. There’s confusion about what’s real versus what’s imagined or projected. Boundaries easily dissolve, or take more work to establish and maintain. Some people will try to escape from their responsibilities. Stick to the rules; the consequences for breaking them are likely to be weighty. 7Saturn opposite Chiron (exact 9/25/03, 10/24/03, 8/15/04 and 12/28/04 from Cancer to Capricorn, and from Leo to Aquarius 7/20/05, 2/19-20/06 and 6/20/06: If the status quo no longer works well, it’s time for a change. In the oppositions from Cancer to Capricorn, the issues needing reform were related to home and family versus work and business. Now that Saturn is in Leo and Chiron is in Aquarius, we may be torn between taking responsibility for children and being with friends. There may be conflicts between leaders and the masses. It’s a period to experiment, innovate and call on creativity. 8 The Saturn-Chiron opposition interacts favorably with the North and South Nodes of the Moon, which are points that help us steer in a new direction.
